Where to wild camp in Prevlaka | Croatia

This spot to wild camp located in Prevlaka is a real diamond in the rough. This small peninsula may be somewhat unassuming now, but, boy oh boy did it have a tumultuous past. This peninsula was particularly sought after due to its great defensive positioning, at the entry point of the bay of Kotor. Surprisingly, Prevlaka was only officially announced as part of the Republic of Croatia in 2002, after ongoing disputes, including the Yugoslav Wars. This spot to wild camp in Privlaka has picture-perfect views, crystal clear waters, a castle to explore, and even a friendly local who is on hand to help you out with anything. It is the perfect place to switch off and detach from the world and soak in your surroundings.

Unfortunately, this spot isn’t totally “perfect”! It doesn’t have any Croatian mobile service/4G signal. However, this can be combated if you are willing to go for a quick detour across the border into Montenegro. Here, you can purchase a tourist sim card for €15 which gives you 500GB of data (which can be used when you wild camp in Prevlaka). And yes, we did just say 500GB for €15!!

There are two key spots where you can wild camp in Prevlaka – the castle ruins, and the beach front spot. Besides these two spots, there are a few other spots where you can pull off the road and park up, but we recommend you don’t stray from the spots described as these two hotspots are the best this peninsula has to offer, in our opinion!

Prevlaka Castle Ruins

This spot is tucked away, under the imposing castle ruins. We slept there for 2 nights in May and nobody joined us. It was bliss. This spot boasts panoramic views of not only the ocean but also the castle. You can even see Montenegro! Due to its aspect, it is the perfect place to watch the sunrise.

It is a mere two-minute walk from the entrance to the castle. You can even go inside and explore the interior. If you are brave enough you can climb up the scaffolding stairs to reach the roof of the caste for the best views. This isn’t for everyone as it does feel a little makeshift. All we’ll say is this would not be allowed in the UK! Nonetheless, we went up to the roof and were truly blown away!

We recommend this spot if you don’t intend on swimming, and it was as it is slightly more treacherous to get to the waterfront – but not impossible! This spot isn’t shaded, however, if you park closer to the mountainside you may be afforded a little shade in the evening.

Of the two spots discussed, this spot is more peaceful!

Unfortunately, this spot offers no amenities, such as toilets, showers, or bins. Therefore, it is perhaps not the best for parking long term. Furthermore, if your vehicle isn’t fully self-contained, then we don’t recommend parking here. If you do choose to utilise this spot, make sure to leave it as you found it – if not better!

Beach Front

This beachfront spot in Prevlaka is the perfect place to wild camp! It is located on a small concrete platform that juts out into the ocean. This spot is great if you are looking to spend time swimming, and getting to know your neighbours. It is a rather social spot, as it is the busier of the two spots. It is also located 50m from a local cafe. This spot has no element of shade so can get extremely hot in the height of summer!

Once again the amenities at this spot are pretty limited. There are bins here, and there is even a local cafe, which may let you to use their facilities. Furthermore, there was a sign that said “toilets and showers”, however when we went to investigate the building was fenced off.

Arguably the best thing about this spot is that the water is deep enough to jump straight in and not hit the bottom. We even jumped off the roof of our van into the water below! It was the perfect way to cool off and combat the crazy Croatian summer heat!

We personally loved both of these spots to wild camp in Prevlaka, particularly the beachfront spot. We could have easily spent a week here. Our only recommendation for this spot is to stock up on food (and a Montenegran sim card) prior to parking here!
